I didn't take that photo, but the produce was so shiny and perfect it blew me away.

Chris,

I often feel like tossing out my rating system, but sometimes it actually helps me decide how I felt about a book, overall, to look at it and say, "Okay, yeah, it was above average, but . . ." Now, I'm curious to see what you'll come up with. :)

Nat,

Our tomatoes are so flavorless, at least until mid-summer. Then, the local ones are pretty good.

I'm absolutely not a morning person, but you do what you have to, I guess. When I was running regularly, I had to do it at around 6:30 or I would have killed myself in the heat - and I still managed to nearly do so. There are really never any breaks, once you become a mother (unless you have relatives or very close friends nearby and I have neither).

cj,

You must not be talking to me because I love Michigan. I didn't want to leave!

Nik,

You'll have to take photos of your tomatoes. If they turn out as stunning as the tomatoes hubby cooked with, they'll be very photogenic. :)

Nyssaneala,

Although the stories in that book took place mostly during the late 50's to early 70's, a good portion of Alaska is still only accessible by float/ski plane or boat and it's pretty sparsely populated for such a large state. I'm not sure I realized that, either. I'll have to see if I can find anything on the Australian Flying Doctor program. Thanks for mentioning that!Bookfoolhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08247136634069540446noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29370872.post-62043493367026760422007-05-22T10:04:00.000-05:002007-05-22T10:04:00.000-05:00I've always been really interested in the Flying D...I've always been really interested in the Flying Doctor service I learned about when we lived in Australia, I never really thought that Alaska has the need for a similar thing. If I ever see a copy of this book somewhere, I'll probably pick it up. There's a lot to be said for the vistas you can find on Superior.

cjhCJhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07798965643027904154noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29370872.post-2604057516183070452007-05-22T08:30:00.000-05:002007-05-22T08:30:00.000-05:00I totally miss having nice tomatoes. There was a France food fair on in Cambridge one weekend while we were living there, and OH. MY. GOD. Those were truly the best tomatoes I've ever had!
As for the early mornings, how do you do it? I am so not a morning person. Another good reason for me not to have kids! :Ptanabatahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04592550784537825632noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29370872.post-32559845141669256242007-05-22T07:26:00.000-05:002007-05-22T07:26:00.000-05:00I've been thinking of a new rating system myself. ...I've been thinking of a new rating system myself. I like it, but I'd happily live like a monk to have a kitchen with a nice gas range and plenty of room to chop and mix, like that lovely Italian island. I'm not allergic to dust (or mites), unlike most allergy sufferers, so I was comfortable most of the year. Plus, I really loved the atmosphere in Ann Arbor, very artsy. I would have happily stayed forever. :)

Alaska was cold in the summer!!!Bookfoolhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08247136634069540446noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29370872.post-50340971392485398172007-05-21T13:42:00.000-05:002007-05-21T13:42:00.000-05:00The parents of a good friend of mine just recently...The parents of a good friend of mine just recently moved back to Alaska.
And I can just think that I'd have a hard time moving farther north just up to Michigan. I used to buy a lot of books from half.com and, in fact, while I was reading the book I got a message saying they had received a copy in the requested condition and in my price range (you can put a book on your wish list and say how much you're willing to spend), but now I tend to put them on my wish list at Paperback Swap, instead. There are a lot of swap sites, now, and they tend to be great for finding more obscure titles.Bookfoolhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08247136634069540446noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29370872.post-3679491718229187842007-05-21T12:15:00.000-05:002007-05-21T12:15:00.000-05:00How did you finally get a copy?
