Estella and NaNo - bounce, bounce, bounce
Yippee! It's Estella time!! A brand, spanking new issue of Estella's Revenge is ready for your reading enjoyment right here. There's no such thing as a bad issue of Estella, but I think this one is particularly awesome. There's a hoopty reading challenge coming up (with prizes - oh, boy!), a book giveaway, and a terrific assortment of interviews and reviews. Go on, gobble it up. Personally, I was most enamored of the interview with the founding director of the Blackbird Books project in Kosovo.
And, it's also NaNoWriMo time. My usual modus operandi is to come up with nothing more than a title (which invariably changes) and hope I don't write myself into a corner within days of beginning (and, yes, that has happened - I started all over on Day #4, last year). So far, so good. I've written 2158 words and shocked myself by spitting out . . . of all things . . . science fiction. Possibly sci-fi with a romantic twist. Where the heck did that come from? I guess it just goes to show that when people ask what I write and I say, "Um, a little bit of everything - just whatever hits me," I am so not kidding. I chose the title "Walking in Sunshine" when I hoped to write Chick Lit (being a person who tries to always think sunny thoughts, it sounded perfect) and have made sunlight an important part of my current story.
On the down side, the NaNo site has been completely bogged, unless my computer is going hinky on me. Hopefully, all the bugs will be worked out quickly. This is my third year and I've never had quite this much trouble with the site.
Another down side is the fact that my husband has just trashed my laptop. So, if and when I finally end up in Oklahoma, I'll be . . . I guess screwed is the proper word. I'm still trying to figure out why on earth Huzzybuns opened the computer and tried to fix a problem on his own. He's a geotechnical engineer, not a computer technician. Dirt, not computers. Completely different things, you know?
Enough of the bummer news. I've written over 2100 words! I'm happy!
Okay, the backside is numb. I've had enough of this computer. I think I'll just take my happiness to the bathtub for a soak.
Bookfool, trying to be an author (again)

Thank you for visiting my blog! I use comment moderation because apparently my blog is a spam magnet. Don't worry. If you're not a robot, your comment will eventually show up and I will respond, with a few exceptions. If a comment smacks of advertising, contains a dubious link or is offensive, it will be deleted. I love to hear from real people! I'm a really chatty gal and I love your comments!
Wow! What a great first day total! I haven't had nearly enough time to work on it but I'm going to try for a couple of hours before I go to bed.
ReplyDeleteThe story sounds great! Let me know when you have an excerpt up. And yes, the site is horribly slow this year. I hope it improves soon.

Science fiction? Oh, I'd love get a glimpse of this one. Keep at it!
ReplyDeleteOh, and good luck with the lap top!
CJ,
ReplyDeleteYou work; I'm a bum. I can get up, walk around, give the Mormons some bottled water (they came, they came!!!), throw in a load of laundry, write a page, pick up a kid, run errands, write a page. It's almost like cheating. LOL
I'll let you know when I get an excerpt up. The first few days are usually pretty bad - not necessarily *this* bad, but patience is always in order (she says, tapping her foot wildly).
Jenclair,
Yep, science fiction. It's bizarrely fun to create an entirely new world in your head. I hope the end product doesn't totally suck! Thank you for the cheerleading. :)
And, thanks for the luck. I think I'll need it. Hubby really did some serious damage, near as he can tell. Fortunately, I do very little writing on that computer. I just can't get used to a laptop keyboard.
Good luck with NaNo! Hope it goes well for you.
ReplyDeleteTristi,
ReplyDeleteThank you! This is my third NaNo experience. I learn a bit more, each go-around - it's great experience and loads of fun. :)
Holy smokes!!! Good job. I'm plugging along on mine. We can do it!
ReplyDeleteI love that you're writing Sci-Fi! That's so cool!!! I'm so glad that I joined NaNo..it's fun, and I'm glad that you decided to stick with it this year...it wouldn't be the same without Bookfool! I can't wait to read an excerpt if you post one...that is if the site ever moves faster than .0001 mph.
ReplyDeleteNik,
ReplyDeleteIt's exhausting but I'm always glad I joined in, when the month is over (and late getting started on the Christmas planning/decorating - that does get thrown off a bit).
Chris,
It really surprised me. I started, as always, with a single quote in my head: "Get a life." That was thoughtfully provided by my husband, who apparently didn't want me to join in on NaNo, this year. Sounds like an opening for Chick Lit, really, but then all of a sudden my chick was terrified of being outside, uploading the news into a receiver built into her bracelet and calling security like she belonged on the Enterprise. And, I was sitting here thinking, "Whoa! That was unexpected!". LOL
I just finally got my buddy page loaded and I see you're smoking us all. You go, Chris!
Congrats on all the speedy writing!! I had planned to join and then realized this is SO the wrong month for a teacher to try to write a novel. *sigh*
ReplyDeleteGood luck ti you and thanks for the Estella plug!
Good work on NaNo!
ReplyDeleteAndi,
ReplyDeleteI always start out with a bang and then, usually, come to a screeching halt. What I excel at is writing myself into a corner. So, fingers and toes are crossed, here. Cross a few parts for me, would ya? :)
Sorry you can't join in. I was really hoping you'd be able to, but it's a rough month to do such an intense challenge. By the time it's all over, the Christmas decorations should be out (but they're not) and the cards need to be written (so I don't bother). I wish they'd move it to a different month, but I guess every month would cause someone conflict trouble.
Gentle Reader,
Thank you! And, now, I should quit checking my blog and go back to work! :)
2158 words is darn good, Nancy, keep it up and I love the idea of romantic science fiction, way to go!
ReplyDeleteGood luck on the book and the computer! and I'm completely psyched it's sci fi.
ReplyDeleteLotus,
ReplyDeleteThank you. Today was a terrible writing day because I was so tired, but I hope to get back to it, tomorrow. I wonder if my brain headed into sci-fi territory because I mentioned Susan Grant's book in that meme about male characters, the other day. Funny how those things work. :)
Carrie,
Oops, got you all psyched up. I hope I don't let you down by not finishing. It seems like I went down this road, once before - a very, very long time ago. I ran myself into a plot wall and couldn't hack my way out of it. LOL Hopefully, this story will turn out a little better. :)
I'm in love with your plot, Nancy! Can't wait to read an excerpt ;) This is so much fun...I'm just dreading the moment when the plot stops flowing for me :/
ReplyDeleteWell, I was at kind of a standstill and here's what you do . . . ask the closest person where you should take it. In my case, it was the husband. He suggested a flash of light and having to zip through time. Hey, why the heck not? So, Ward and Lita are about to start running from the bumper. Through time. Possibly in the Wild Places. And, they've got to find her missing sister, so who knows where that will go. I'm sure that makes total sense. ;)
ReplyDeleteTime travel? Oooooo, just my thing ... to read, that is. I'm not doing sci-fi, but I love to read (some of) it. I wanna read your book already, so you have to keep going, girl! You're off to a great start.
ReplyDeleteHi Bonnie!
ReplyDeleteYep, a little bit of life in the future, a little time travel and a bit of romance is what I'm aiming for. I'm not so sure I'm any good at writing sci-fi, but I'm having fun. I've got an excerpt up, now - it's rough but I'm trying to keep my internal editor quiet. Thanks. Looks like you're doing terrific, too!
Too funny to hear about your hubby and the computer. Hope it gets fixed soon. And good luck with NaNo - that's a very good number to kick start the project.
ReplyDeleteIndigo,
ReplyDeleteThe problem with the computer issue is that now the hubby is taking over my desktop in order to try to move the information from the dead laptop to a portable hard drive. There are cords everywhere. I accidentally kicked over the hard drive, last night, and it came unplugged. But, I still managed to squeeze in a couple thousand words. My goal is a minimum of 2000 words per day, 4000 if possible. Thanks! I'm having fun. :)
