Counting Down

64 days till the beginning of the
Chunkster Challenge
: to begin Jan 1, 2007
Are you piling up your fat books and/or writing lists to take to your library?
More details, as the date crawls closer.

3 days till the beginning of National Novel Writing Month.
Cybele at NaNoWriMo helped me put the little icon in my column.
I'm eternally grateful.
I have no idea what I'm going to write.

Finished: Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See - loved it. Don't feel like writing a review because I'm having a decompression day after many weeks of exhausting Motherly Balancing Act, as Son #2 bounced from swim practice to band practice to school to swim meet to football game to band contest. Yesterday was the state swim meet in Laurel. See my Simple Things entry here for pics and happy moments

Up next: The Thirteenth Tale . . . if it grabs me.
Update: It seems to have reached out and sucked me in, although I'm not far into the book.

Still working on: No Plot? No Problem by Chris Baty

Shouldn't have bought, but did anyway: Poison Study by Maria Snyder

Music I really want to get my hands on: Every song from the soundtrack of the wonderful Australian movie The Dish
Ferry Cross the Mersey by Gerry and the Pacemakers (till recently, I admit to not knowing the title - this is true of a lot of 60's music I love)

Hope to do soon: a book meme or two - loving those SciFiChick, Sassymonkey, and Andi have added to their blogs, recently.

Wishing I had: more time and Hugh Laurie in the house to entertain me.

Happy about: the fact that House, M.D. returns this week - don't let the time slot change screw you up (in addition to the time change, which I admit really mucked up my day as I lost track of time after forgetting to change all but one clock - oops).

Unhappy about: days that will now end sooner (not a morning person).

Can't wait: to grown another inch taller. Oh, darn, that's not going to happen, so I can't wait to get started on NaNoWriMo.

Wondering: How does changing to beta effect the links and such? Would it screw things royally? I'm tired of my background and ready for change, although I admit that now may be bad timing.

Duct-taping my loose fingers, now. They're getting carried away.

Read Happy.

  1. Oh yeah...can't wait for House! I've missed him. :)

    Glad you enjoyed SNOWFLOWER.

Happy thoughts sent your way regarding your writing. I look forward to hearing about what you have chosen to write about.

  3. Joy,

Thanks for the good wishes. I'll let you know when I figure out what I'm writing. I'm unfortunately very much a seat-of-the-pants writer. I don't like that about myself, but it works, I guess - I did complete a novel in 2005.

    Princess///reeves,

Can I just call you Princess? Thanks so much and wow. I am absolutely bowled over by your kind words. I hope I can live up to them!! The idea that anyone would look up to me as a role model is just amazing beyond words. Many, many thanks for telling me; I really needed the upper.

  4. if i could give you an inch of my height, i would.
i keep trying to convince myself that the reason i don't get asked out much really has nothing to do with being taller than most guys..
    i'm not bitter or anything.

Don't ever stop those fingers of yours from typing away, bookfool! I so love your chatty posts, honestly, I do!

I am very excited about the Chunkster Challenge as I honestly believe it is going to help me overcome my fear of big books - also, it's exciting to finally be able to get round to some of the books I have had sitting on my shelf for years!

Good luck with NanoWriMo, I know you're excited about it - will we get to see some of your writing?

  6. Angela,

No, no, of course you're not bitter. LOL

How tall are you? We just need to get you someone like Hugh Laurie. His legs go on forever.

    Lotus,

    Ah, thanks, you're too sweet.

I'm glad you're excited about the Chunkster Challenge! I hope it helps me get through a few of those intimidating fat books, too!

And, yes, I'm raring to go on the writing. Last year I said I'd gladly share excerpts when I was finished and then I couldn't stand to look at my manuscript, I was so tired of it. So I can't promise anything. Maybe I should post an excerpt from my 2005 book. Then again, it really is pretty awful!!!

Hold off on the beta switch for now. I changed over my blogger blog too soon and it did mess things up (plus, they use the same old backgrouds as before). My online book club read Snow Flower in August and we all enjoyed it. Just finished The Thirteenth Tale and we will be discussing it on November 5th. If you are finished by then don't be shy and stop on by! Stephanie @ www.thewrittenword.wordpress.com

  8. About 6' tall.. and the average height for a guy is between 5'9" and 5'10".
well, i find Hugh Laurie extremely UNattractive. creepy looking, infact. and he looks older than my father.
so, i'll pass on him.. lol

i'd take someone like Peter Patrelli from Heroes.. even tho he's only 5'10".. see, i'm not that picky! lol

  9. Stephanie,

Thank you, thank you for telling me about your experience with beta and for visiting! If I finish The Thirteenth Tale in time, I'll definitely drop in! I'm enjoying it, but haven't gotten very far. Hopefully, I can get in some good reading time in a bit. :)

    Angela,

Yep, you're tall! 5'9" was officially average for men, last I heard - that was my dad's height. My eldest is 5'10" and we don't know about Will. Probably about your height - hubby was 6 feet till he shrank.

I thought Hugh Laurie was too goggly-eyed when he was younger, but now I think he looks better. He's awfully wrinkled - just three years older than me but I guessed he was in his 50's till I read otherwise. Still, I find him terribly sexy. It's probably the height, the fact he's so trim, those blue eyes, his expressive face and the British accent . . . nice combination, IMHO. He's really witty in real life, as well.

I probably didn't talk you into sudden adoration, but that's what I think and I'm sticking to it.

Oh, no, you're not picky at all. LOL

  10. Bookfool, I'm looking forward to the Chunster Challenge and yes, my list is started. I'm finding lots of those fat things I want to read, but I'm going to focus on the ones I own, first. So glad you are hosting this challenge.

I really enjoyed Snow Flower, too.

  11. Booklogged,

I'm going to read chunksters from my piles, too - that's part of the point. They're sitting here glaring at me, after all! :)

  12. Hugh was soooo much fun on SNL this weekend, and I'm tickled ridiculous that House MD is back on this week. Yay!

So many things to comment on in your post: good luck with NaNoWriMo, the chunky book challenge, and I must try Snow Flower. I've heard nothing but good things about it.

I'm hoping to select a couple of Classic Chunksters to count them for both your challenge and Booklogged's Classics challenge.

  14. YAY for Hugh Laurie! He has amazingly nice legs. Especially in heels.

Can not WAIT for House tonight!!!

Good luck with your NaNo. I'm nervous.

  15. Andi,

Me, too! I can't wait till tonight! Those little kids in fairy costumes had better be done begging by the time Hugh comes on. ;)

Thanks for the good wishes. As to Snow Flower, I think the best thing about it (personal opinion only) was learning about a culture I knew little about and a horrible social custom (footbinding) I'd mistakenly assumed was eradicated long, long ago. Sorry if my grammar is suffering; I need a nap. Anyway, point being, I love books that teach.

    SuziQ,

I might double up, too, since I've got quite a few chunksters that are also classics (Great Expectations, Les Miserables, War and Peace). Might as well knock out two birds with one rock. :)

    Heather,

I was kind of jealous of those legs!! And, don't you wish you looked as good in a mini? Or, maybe you do - I don't. LOL

I'm not so much nervous about Nano as a little doubtful that I'll do as well with hubby gone. I really wish we could have started a month ago. The eagerness wore off a bit; I have to occasionally pep talk myself back into excitement. That works fine as long as I'm listening. :)

    ReplyDelete
  16. LOL, I would think with hubby gone it would be easier to find time to write! My hubby will bug the heck out of me, I know it.

And yes, I do wish I looked that good in a mini. My legs are short and not that shapely. And his rear...well, he has a very niiiiice rear. :)

  17. Nancy,

I keep hearing great things about Snowflower. Glad to hear you enjoyed it, since I think we have similar reading tastes. Speaking of which, I think I may be the only person on the planet who IS NOT loving The Thirteenth Tale. I just can't seem to get engrossed in it and I'm over halfway in. It's not bad, but it just isn't living up to all the hype. Sigh.

I, too, would love to grow another inch or two. I'm just shy of 5'5" whereas by lovely daughter is 5'10" and all legs. Lucky girl!

I'm holding off on the Beta switch, although I keep hearing rumors that Blogger will switch EVERYONE over in the not so distant future (whether they want to be switch or not!). I'm still toying with the idea of moving over to wordpress...

  18. Heather,

My hubby does pester me when he's home, but he's *very* good about writing time when I haven't done it for a while. He was really helpful, last year. He cooks, ya know. I just tried to ignore the "explosion occurred here" look for a month. My DH has been traveling regularly (too much, really) for 23 years. I hate it. It's a relief when he's home for 4 days straight.

    ROTFLMAO about Hugh's rear!!!

    Les,

I didn't think the writing was outstanding (it was very good - don't let me put you off) but I really liked learning about the culture -- more than reading the writing, if that makes sense. I think you'll either love it or hate it. Just guessing. LOL

Daniel's high-school sweetheart was 5'9" and she looked like a model - lucky chick. I don't think I'd want to be quite that tall, but 5'6" or 5'7" would have been nice. I'm happy I made it to 5'3", given my family genes. My maternal grandmother was 4'10". Yeeks.

I hadn't heard they might switch everyone to beta, but Stephanie convinced me to hang loose. Wordpress didn't work for me - too slow and I couldn't upload photos - but there are some beautiful blogs at Wordpress. I'd be tempted if I didn't happen to already know that site simply doesn't work for me.

  19. Hi...

I just had to comment again about House. I LOVE "House" (the character), not Hugh Laurie. I thoroughly applaud the writing for that show. Since last season he hasn't fully gotten into the swing of being his old self, so I'm looking forward to that.

  20. Hi, Bookfool, I haven't visited for a while and really needed to catch up. I'm glad to hear about Snowflower. It's on my A to Z list, but I'm taking a break from that in January for the Classics and Chunkster Challenges. I'll try to find books that match both.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Joy,

I think House was back to his snarky self, tonight. What a fun episode! Maybe you would have preferred the very excellently buff firefighter I saw, today, to Hugh Laurie (physically speaking). Oh, darn, I forgot to put that great moment on my new blog.

    Framed,

Nice to see you! I may not say much about books for a while, thanks to the writing challenge. Hope you're not sighing and thinking, "Wow, bad timing."

Sounds good to me - sometimes you need to alter your reading pattern for a while. Or, at least, I do. I require a lot of variety and change or I get nutty. :)

  22. I love baseball, but am really glad that House is back on TV. Hugh Laurie is so fine -- blue eyes, height, sarcasm, bitterness...you wouldn't think it at first, it all adds up to a great package.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I agree, Bybee!!! I think Hugh's classy in real life and a phenomenal actor, one of the few who could pull off the House character.
