Armchair Traveler Proves Irresistible, Film at Eleven

Okay, I give up. I really want to join in on The Armchair Traveler challenge because I have quite a few travel memoirs and plenty of novels that easily fit the qualifications, most of which have been taunting me for a while. Lesley at A Life in Books is hosting. I'm going to start with what happens to be near my chair and add to this post when I feel like it.

1. If You Lived Here I'd Know Your Name by Heather Lende (Alaska)
2. Cry, the Beloved Country by Alan Paton (Africa)
3. Nectar in a Sieve by Kamala Markandaya (India)
4. Olive Season by Carol Drinkwater (France)
5. Learning to Bow by Bruce Feiler (Japan)
6. Howard's End by E. M. Forster (Edwardian England)

Alternates:

7. A House in Corfu by Emma Tennant (Greece)
8. All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy (Mexico)
9. Extra Virgin by Annie Hawes (Italy)
10. Appointment in Samarra by John O'Hara (Gibbsville, Pennsylvania)
11. Last Days of Summer by Steve Kluger or The Brooklyn Follies by Paul Auster (New York)
12. Susannah Morrow by Megan Chance (Salem, Massachusetts)
13. While I Live by John Marsden (Australia)
14. Angels of a Lower Flight by *author's name removed* (Haiti)

I think I'll stop right there, for now, but I appreciate Lesley's flexibility because I typically do a lot of substituting.

  1. Ooh, your list looks great. I'm also reading the Alaska book for this challenge. I have Cry, the Beloved Country on my night table but haven't read it yet. This'll be a good challenge!

  2. Camille,

Cool! I'm excited we have two of the same books listed! Cry, the Beloved Country is one of two books my son has to choose between for AP History, and I often read along with my kids so that I can quiz them (but, I wanted to read both of them, anyway!). I think it'll be fun, too. I kept trying to resist, but it didn't work, so it must be the challenge for me. :)

  3. This looks like an exciting challenge, Nancy! I love your choice of books, apart from "Nectar in A Sieve" (a depressing, but important read) I haven't read any of the others so I look forward to your reviews.

I remember watching the movie "All The Pretty Horses" a couple of years ago, was it based on Cormac McCarthy's book, I wonder? It was a wonderful movie and the music is just brilliant...I bought the CD and listen to it even now!

Yay, you are joining! I read Extra Virgin last year. Cute memoir. I haven't heard of A House in Corfu but that already sounds good to me on the title alone :)

  5. Lotus,

Darn, I was afraid of that - Nectar in a Sieve is one of the choices kiddo has for his history class. I hate it that they always choose depressing books.

I do think the movie was based on the book, but I haven't seen it.

    Iliana,

Oh, good, I'm so glad one of my choices is cute. I'm most definitely not in the mood for a dreary read, right now!!

  6. I'm reading Howard's End for the Decades challenge and All the Pretty Horses for the Book Awards Challenge. Your Traveler books look interesting! I can't wait for July 1...

  7. Trish,

I thought about doing the decades challenge but I was too lazy to look at all those copyrights. Pitiful, I know. :) I'll be curious to see what you have to say about both books. It's always fun to compare thoughts.

  9. Jennifer,

I resisted but apparently resistance was futile. And, I'm enjoying the books I just picked up. I'm getting a tiny jump on the reading, but I won't finish anything before July, so I figure it's okay. :)
