The winner of the drawing for a copy of Matrimony is . . .
Janel
Thanks to all who entered!! And, remember, the paperback version of Matrimony is slated to be released today, August 26!! If you missed my review, dash right over here to read about it.
Matrimony was a 2007 New York Times Notable book. And, it's also very good in Bookfool's opinion, for whatever that's worth.
I really enjoyed reading everyone's thoughts about the cover of this book. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Happy Reading!

This is a new cover than the one I've seen. I much prefer the other one with the sink and the toothbrushes. To me, it says togetherness. The blue shoes in this cover are too small. They look like a child's shoes and that doesn't go well with the title.
ReplyDeleteI'm anxious to read it though!
I'm glad you posted this...Mr. Henkin contacted me recently and asked if I'd do a giveaway on my blog as well, and I had forgotten. Thunk me over the head with a huge Webster's!
ReplyDeleteHm. Well, looking at it, I see the shoes of a young man and a young woman, who are old enough to wear "adult" style shoes, but may not be as formed or mature as they (or we) would like. Given the title of the book, It also shows a hopeful image - one that says they are willing to take a chance on each other in the belief that it will be a good life choice.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Good luck with your sister!
Yay! I've been looking for your giveaway post on this book! From looking at the cover, and the title, I would guess that this married couple is very orderly. They take their shoes off right when they come in the door, to keep from tracking in anything undesireable into their home.
ReplyDeleteI would love to be entered for the drawing and thanks for having it.
ReplyDeleteThose are some ugly shoes, but I like the hardwood floor. Best wishes for safe travel.
ReplyDeleteThis cover bothers me a little bit because there is only a ring over his shoes, not on her shoes. But maybe that is the point?
ReplyDeleteEither way- I want to read it.
Holly,
ReplyDeleteI thought the shoes looked too small, too -- but I hadn't thought about the toothbrushes symbolizing togetherness! So true. Thanks for answering! It's a really good book. :)
Bybee,
You're so funny. You should have just asked me; I'd have gladly reminded you that you're giving a book away. LOL
Bridget,
What a cool answer!!
And, thank you! I need lots of luck. My sister won't talk to me by phone or email. I'm afraid if I stand near her she'll bite. :)
Laura,
Good answer! We do exactly that -- take off our shoes at the door and line them all up in a row. Their floor looks a lot cleaner than ours, though (stupid oak trees). I held off on posting because I figured everyone was probably getting sick of giveaways and a break would be good. :)
Yolanda,
All righty, then. You're all signed up!
Kevin,
Ugly shoes, eh? Well, don't hold back -- just say what you think. LOL Thanks for answering. I'm really enjoying reading the answers (and I'll bet the author will have fun reading, too). :)
Jessica,
I wondered about that, too. It would make more sense to me to have a ring on each shoe (but someone at Booklogged's blog mentioned that the "o" in Matrimony is the female ring -- I totally missed that). Thanks for your answer! You're all signed up. :)
I think this book sounds so good, and I have been wanting to read it for months now. If I had to pick a cover, I'd say I thought the sink scene one was better. Just my opinion though.
ReplyDeleteTo me it says that we'll always be together side by side. No one left behind, in perfect harmony.
ReplyDeleteOr! It could mean after a long days of work, kick your shoes off, bring out a bottle of wine, and snuggle on the couch.
I'm terribly at interpreting...

I prefer this cover to the bathroom. It's much more brighter and the bathroom one makes me think of the marriage going down the drain. While the shoes seems to say, "Welcome!"

I saw Booklog's post/question also, and I while I like the clean lines of the "sink" book cover, it doesn't say "married" to me. The two shoes are better, but either he's a giant or she has the smallest feet around.
ReplyDeleteThe book sounds interesting, especially since I just celebrated 37 years with my BF/WH. I can identify with the cross culture aspect. While we're both Christian, he is Catholic raised in Hawaii and I'm Protestant raised by Midwest parents in California - two totally different worlds!
Rebekah, Yan, Linda and Pamelahd,
ReplyDeleteThank you all for joining in! It's really quite fun (and a little wild) reading how diverse the reactions to those covers are!
You're all signed up. :)
When I first saw this cover, I thought it was about a father and daughter - guess the woman's shoes look small. I didn't even notice the ring on the man's shoes until I read it in another post. Hope your trip goes well.
ReplyDeleteI would love to be entered into your awesome contest!!! The cover...hmmm...I am not sure I really like it, I do like the colors, and I get the pair of shoes represents a couple, but I think I like the bathroom cover better. Thanks:)
ReplyDeleteJuliann,
ReplyDeleteThat was my first thought, also. The shoes look tiny to me.
The trip is going well -- thanks for asking!
Julie,
Well, then, you shall be entered. I'm rather partial to the bathroom cover, also. :)
Me me me!!! I want to enter for a chance to with this book.
ReplyDeleteAt first glance...I like the cover with the shoes better....and my very insightful reason for this you might ask? I love shoes! Lol! So of course it grabbed my attention first.
One thing I like about it is that the shoes are very different, which would make me think that the two people are very different and therefore, make for an interesting book revolving around their marriage.
The shiny, men's shoes makes me think of an uptight business man and the blue Mary Jane's - a rather artistic woman who likes to wear dresses. I like the sink cover better, though. For some reason is just feels more like "Matrimony" to me than the shoes.
ReplyDeleteKris,
ReplyDeleteThat's so funny. I should have said, "Come over and see the cover. It has shoes on it!" LOL I'll know better, next time I have a shoe cover on my blog. ;)
Janel,
Interesting thoughts! It'll be fun to see what readers say about how the book turned out after all that pondering about the covers, in the coming weeks (or months).
Gotcha both signed up!
Interesting cover! Book sounds like a wonderful read. I would love to be entered in your contest. photoquest@bellsouth.net
ReplyDeleteI love those blue shoes on the cover - I want some :) I figured they were quite small looking because they are heels.
ReplyDeleteThanks for having the drawing Nancy. I hope all goes well with your sister. That must be so hard to deal with.
Photoquest,
ReplyDeleteOkie dokie. You're all signed up!
Iliana,
That's a great answer. Come to think of it, they do look like heels. Now, you just go shopping in beautiful, funky Austin (unfair!). I'll bet you can find a pair. :)
Thank you; it's definitely a nuisance dealing with my sister, but we're both trying to get along.
Please do NOT put my name in your drawing - I just wanted to mention I will also be having a drawing of Matrimony of September 8 so if you don't win here come on over!
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with Iliana about the heels comment. It seems small because it’s on a slant so it’s probably larger than it appears. I love that blue shade on that shoe! As for my interpretation, it’s a spin-off of Laura’s comment. Actually it’s the same thing...drat, I need a new brain.
ReplyDeleteaimme21 AT yahoo.com
Tara,
ReplyDeletePeachy. Will not add you to the drawing. :)
Amy,
I love that blue shade, too. :) Laura made a good comment; let's just say you're allowed to be like-minded.
The cover tells me that this book is about a guy and girl, trying to live side by side, and who wear very uncomfortable shoes!
ReplyDeleteAm I entered? :)
Suey,
ReplyDeleteLOL You actually made me snort. Yes, you're entered. Thanks for the laugh. :)
It's an interesting cover at least. And hands down it beats pictures of scantily clad men/women. I think the cover is provoking.

Hi! Just commenting that I've changed my e-mail address to linda9510@gmail.com, sorry for the inconvenience.
ReplyDeleteRenee,
ReplyDeleteGood point! LOL
Linda,
No problem. :)
The cover makes me think of father daughter dances, because the one pair looks small. Maybe about the dad giving his daughter away at the wedding.
ReplyDeleteI love contest!
Totally off the subject...how do you 1) post ahead of the date on blogger.com? I haven't figured out how to drip yet. Unless I've really lost it (always a possibility)...it's the 25th today). And 2) how do you change that little "brilliant remark" under comments? Couldn't figure that out, either.
ReplyDeleteYou should add computer genius to your profile. ~Suzanne
Suzanne,
ReplyDeleteTo post-date, you have to first publish a post under the current date and then edit it and change the date to the future. So, when I put up my current sticky post on the Matrimony contest, I published it on the day I wrote it then immediately hit "edit post" button and changed the date to August 26. You can't just publish with a future date, anymore (if you do, a post will show up on your dashboard as "pending" and won't appear on your blog till that date), although Blogger used to let you do so. They've just recently added the extra step.
I'm not so hot with computer stuff; I get a lot of help from friends. Nat of In Spring it is the Dawn is my main go-to person when I'm baffled. She kindly taught me the new sticky-post method. :)
Oops, Suzanne, I missed that part about changing the wording from comments to scathingly brilliant remarks. I've looked and haven't yet figured out how I did that. I'll try to remember to look again, tomorrow. It seems like it should be under the "comments" portion of "settings", but I don't see it at the moment and I'm about to fall on my face. I'll dash over to your blog if I figure it out, tomorrow. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm just dropping by to say I gave you a blog award today! :)
ReplyDeleteJeane,
ReplyDeleteWhy, thank you!! How cool! And, thanks for reminding me that I need to draw a name, tonight. I'm so busy arouund the house that I keep forgetting!
