Bookishly Speaking

I know . . . this is supposed to be a book blog. I should occasionally mention books, right? Here's what I've recently finished and am currently reading:

Just finished:

Album of the Damned by Paul Garson -

That's Album of the Damned by Paul Garson - sorry about the funky blogger spacing dysfunction - A coffee-table sized picture book (with plenty of very informative text) that shows Nazis in their daily lives -- smiling, laughing, horsing around, the kids wearing military uniform bits, etc. I'll be reviewing this one for Estella's Revenge and will post a link when it's available.

For the Love of St. Nick by Garasamo Maccagnone - A very short Christmas story about two little boys who pray for the safe return of their father from a secret mission during the Vietnam War. I need to check and see to whom this book is directed (adults? children?) because I couldn't get a grip on that, but I loved the story and plan to review it ASAP.

Now reading:

Flight to St. Antony by Tony Blackman - An aviation mystery set on an island in the Caribbean. The hero is an insurance investigator who has been sent to determine the reason a plane was forced to ditch just miles from the airport in St. Antony. At this point, the Cockpit Voice Recorder has mysteriously disappeared. I'm really enjoying this, so far. The dialogue is a little flat, but the mystery is so interesting that it's still mesmerizing. I set it aside for a few days, so I'm only about 1/3 of the way through -- hoping to finish, this weekend.

Hurricane of Independence: The Untold Story of the Deadly Storm at the Deciding Moment of the American Revolution by Tony Williams - Not too far into this one, but I'm finding that at times I'm engrossed and at other times he totally loses me and I have to reread a few paragraphs to unravel details.

The Pages in Between by Erin Einhorn - The author's tale of her search to unravel her mother's history as a small Jewish child who was sheltered in Poland during WWII. This is particularly relevant to me because I just read Album of the Damned and have been recently reminded of how few Polish Jews survived the Holocaust. I'm not far into this one, but the first chapter had me all choked up. It's emotional.

Just walked in the door, today:

Mr. & Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy by Sharon Lathan - Another Pride & Prejudice spin-off. This will be my second. The first was such fun that I'm doing some serious finger-crossing that I'll be able to handle a completely different version of "The Darcys, after the wedding."

Hope everyone has a fabulous weekend!

Bookfool, who will be very busy cleaning and purging . . . again

I think you have the most diverse reading taste of all the bloggers that I read. The St Nick book next to the Nazi kid is a combo I never expected to see. Well done!

  2. "When weather changed history..." Does Tony Williams work for the weather channel? Which makes me wonder about other hurricane inspired works of fiction, even. OK, my mind is off following tangents. I havent' yet found (ok, I haven't even started to look for) that book I was telling you about - I will!

You've been reading some pretty heavy stuff. I can't wait to read your reviews of Album of the Damned and The Pages in Between.

  4. Softdrink,

You know, that didn't even occur to me -- Christmas right next to Nazis. Kind of a freaky combination, isn't it? I definitely have extremely eclectic taste. It's because I get bored easily -- same reason I usually have 3 or 4 different types of book going at once.

    Care,

No hurry on finding the title. Tony Williams is a historian (or, if you're an old-fashioned grammar queen, "an historian") who decided to quit teaching to write a book. I wonder if he collects satellite images of hurricanes, like I do . . . did. I used to have a notebook with print-outs. Call me nutty.

    Ms. Onion,

Well, Album of the Damned is definitely heavy! I try to mix it up, though. Usually if there isn't something light balancing out what I'm reading, I'll shut down. All darkness is not good for little Bookfool. I haven't actually listed everything I'm reading -- there's another book of short inspirational stories that I read whenever I need just a minute or two of reading material. I keep it in the bedroom and can't find an image of the cover because it's an older book I just dug out of a bin. It provides a little injection of light. :)

  5. Mr & Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy has arrived here, too. I'm looking forward to it. On the other hand, I'm interested in Album of the Damned and The Pages in Between -- not at all in the jane austen line!

  6. There have been so many Austen spinoffs lately, huh? The other one you are referring to is The Darcys and the Bingleys? I recently received that one and will be interested to see how it goes--it is my first Austen "sequel"

I look forward to your review of For the Love of St. Nick--I'm in the mood for something holidayish.

  7. Jenclair,

Mr. & Mrs. Darcy is a really pretty ARC, isn't it? I can hardly keep my paws off of it. Album of the Damned is really an amazing book -- a great combination of text and photos. My review will be in the December Estella's Revenge (still haven't written it -- that's on this weekend's do list), so not long. It seems like an odd mix, but I like throwing some sweetness and light in between the darker reads. You must, also, yes?

    Trish,

There are loads of spin-offs. I avoided them like the plague, for a while, but absolutely loved The Darcys and The Bingleys. Although there were a few changes to Darcy that I disliked, I just set my opinions aside and enjoyed the banter.

I think For the Love of St. Nick is sweet. I hope to get a review posted tomorrow. We're cleaning house and I'm sure my husband is wondering why I'm sitting at the computer. Better run. LOL

  9. Thanks, Brittanie!

I'll go check it out. I hope you got out while it was warm, today! I couldn't believe how fast it grew cold, once the clouds swept in. :)

  10. I can't wait for your review of For the Love of St. Nick...that one has really caught my eye.

  11. Debi,

It's that cover -- gorgeous, isn't it? I'm still trying to formulate my thoughts, but hope to have a review up by tomorrow. :)

  12. Oh, I'm so glad to hear that For THe Love of St. Nick was good! I had a feeling it would be. It would've been so disappointing to have a cover that beautiful and a book that was bad. I'm waiting until December to start my Christmas reading, but it will be one of the first that I read!!

  13. Look at you with all your awesome reading. I've been having a relatively slow month, but with school winding down I hope to kick it up a notch. I can't wait for your Album of the Damned review!

  14. Chris,

I think it's a sweet little story. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Isn't that cover phenomenal?

    Andi,

I've had a few pretty good months, here. Hope your reading improves during the holidays.

I'm still trying to get my brain to formulate sentences instead of just adjectives with exclamation points for Album of the Damned. LOL It's that kind of book. See Care's description of Interpreter of Maladies for my favorite choice of wording:

  16. Hello,

Actually, it is true. I taught
history for ten years, but I am now a full-time writer of historical non-fiction. I don't work for the weather channel, but I would love to get a documentary show highlighting the book.

I am currently working on a new book that is scheduled to be published next fall. I'd love to answer any questions you might have about "Hurricane of Independence" or anything else that comes to mind.

    I hope my presence is not . . . well . . . intrusive on the conversation.

    Cheers,
    Tony Williams

  17. Tink,

I'm having loads of fun, when I can squeeze in the reading. My husband is hanging out with me, this week -- could be difficult getting to the good stuff (books, of course). :)

    Tony,

No, of course you're not intruding. Readers love writers. I may have some questions for you, so I'll chase you down if I need to ask you anything prior to my review. It'll be a while, with Thanksgiving coming up and a husband off work for the week (now, he is intrusive).

The Weather Channel would actually be a great place for a history documentary on the Hurricane of Independence; I wouldn't have thought of that. Thanks for dropping by!

  18. I really liked The Pages in Between, glad to see you are reading it. I'm looking forward to your review of this. It's a pretty amazing story.

  19. Tara,

I'm hung up because I've got to finish Flight to St. Antony and I'm just getting back to reading (having a husband lurking in the house really eats into my reading time) but I enjoyed what little I read of Pages. I'm looking forward to getting back to it, soon. :)

  20. Album of the Damned sounds interesting. I have both The Pages in Between and Mr & Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy, but haven't read them yet. Looking forward to your reviews!

  21. Anna,

I've just read the first two chapters of The Pages in Between, since I needed to finish my aviation mystery, but I hope to get into it again, soon. I could barely keep my hands off the Darcy story, last night. After a crime novel, an album of Nazi photos and a mystery with a plane crash at its heart, I was in need of something lighter. But, I have a book I've needed to get to for a while -- Waiting for Daybreak. It's doing the trick. :) I'll be looking forward to your reviews, also!!!
