Holly wrote a wonderful review of A Passion Denied that I hope you'll read if you're interested in historical fiction.
I'm setting this one aside for a couple of reasons. I realized after reading Holly's review that it wasn't so much the premise, which I considered a bit weak, putting me off so much as the fact that I'm unfamiliar with the characters and maybe feeling a bit out of place, as this is the third in a series. Sometimes it works to pick up a book out of sequence and sometimes it doesn't. This one threw me and, after a bit of consideration, I think I simply need to start at the beginning of the series and work my way forward.
I like the author's writing style and highly encourage you to read Holly's review, as well as the sneak peek chapter, below.

Thanks for the honest review and the kind link love! There is so much back history and character development in the other books, especially in regards to the older sisters and their husbands. I think that reading them in order, if you can, would make a difference.
ReplyDeleteHolly,
ReplyDeleteI got that impression from your review and I'm soooo glad I read it. I did feel like I was missing something. Now I know to go back to the beginning, so thanks for your terrific review! :)
I really love these books, so when I saw DNF my heart sank. If you get a chance to go back and read the others, I hope you enjoy them. :) Sometimes the plot might stretch a bit of believability, but it's all in how the story is told.
ReplyDeleteAmy,
ReplyDeleteI don't mind a bit of a stretch if a story is well-told. I think in this case it was just a matter of needing a bit of background. I'll have to go look for your review, tomorrow. Thanks for reinforcing Holly's opinion. I trust both of you. :)
So hard to pick up in the middle of a series!
ReplyDeleteHey, I've given you an award--come by and check it out: http://tiny.cc/3OU2R
Yes, because you are awesome :)
ok, I will start with book number 1 :) in this series :)
ReplyDeleteGentle Reader,
ReplyDeleteYep, I'm finding it harder to dip into a series, these days, unless I start at the beginning. I used to read out of order, all the time.
I'm awesome? Gosh, thanks! I'll check that out, tomorrow. It's actually 2am and I'm about to head to bed. Motherhood is a bear.
Veens,
You'll be happier starting at the beginning, I think. I'm going to give my copy to my church library if our local library has them, and just read them at my leisure.
Just a technical FYI - A Passion Denied is published by Revell (Baker) Books, (NOT Harvest House as your entry states.) :)
ReplyDeleteDonna,
ReplyDeleteThank you! I don't know how I came up with Harvest House instead of Revell, but I've corrected the error.
I absolutely have to start at the beginning of a series. I'm not one of those either who can pick one up midway through the series and enjoy it. I think you just miss too much background not starting from the beginning.
ReplyDeleteDar,
ReplyDeleteI'm slowly finding that's the case with me, too. I used to just pick up any old book in the middle of a series, no problem. If I liked the characters and writing style, then I'd go back to the beginning. But, now, I don't feel quite as comfortable starting in the middle.
Oh my goodness!!! I love this book!! It is AMAZING!!! There are so many twists and turns - and so much romance and passion - and the HUMOR!! - OH MY GOODNESS!!! You will laugh, cry (or bawl in my case), grieve, love, and just basically LIVE LIFE with these characters!!! Julie Lessman is my new all-time favorite author, and all 3 of her books in the Daughters of Boston series are MUST HAVE'S for any Christian fiction lover's shelf!! I will definitely be reading them over and over!!! Trust me!!! You will not be disappointed!!! And a side note – I am also BLOWN AWAY by Julie herself!! She not only an author who takes the time to actually READ her fan emails – but she actually RESPONDS to them…usually right away (like in the same day – sometimes the same hour!!) She GENUINELY CARES and LOVES her readers!!!! She is truly a cut above the rest!!!!!
