Whew! I'll come back and add links if I ever have the strength. What a year!
You had a great year in books!
ReplyDeleteKathy,
ReplyDeleteThanks! As I was typing my list up, I realized it's going to be very hard to narrow down to a few favorites. I really read a lot of good books!
When it comes to favorites, I usually type next to the title if I really liked it. I may give a book an A+ but it may not be a favorite. :)
ReplyDeleteKrista,
ReplyDeleteI wait till the end of the year to choose favorites, simply because I never know if a book is going to stick with me. I consider that the true test. If I read something in January or June and still remember it vividly at the start of the next year (and I liked it), it's a favorite. I've been surprised to find that some books I gushed about are completely forgotten by the end of the year!
What a great reading year! I hope this year is just as great as last year was.
ReplyDeleteVasilly,
ReplyDeleteThank you! It's been great, so far. I've finished three books and I'm enjoying those that I'm reading. Hope you have a terrific reading year, too!
Congrats on making it to over 200! I'd love to accomplish that one of these years!!
ReplyDeleteMichelle,
ReplyDeleteThanks! I didn't plan on shooting for 200, but it was fun to hit that high mark! :)
What, or which novels to start with rather, would you suggest to a naive reader like me who reads only popular novels like those of Khalid Hossieni, John Grisham, P G Wodehouse, Stephan King and Dan Brown ??
ReplyDeleteI love Sherman Alexie. Good list.
ReplyDeleteAmar,
ReplyDeleteI'd suggest that you experiment with a variety of reading material to find what you like. What are your special interests? You can start by looking for books with a setting you like or a character doing something you'd like to learn about.
I read a little of everything, myself, and that's been true for so long that I've learned to ignore the bestseller lists. I already know most of those books are not for me. Instead, I go either to the library or a bookstore and flip through books whose covers and/or titles grab me. I read the cover blurb or jacket-flap info, then I do what I call the "flip test".
The flip test involves flipping through a book and randomly stopping to read a passage. It's amazing how well the flip test works. I'll read several random passages. If I find that I want to read on, even though I've flipped to the middle of a book and have no way of knowing the context, I'll give the book a go. If none of the random passages interest me or I find myself drifting into other thoughts as I read, I put the book down.
Be willing to try anything, even outside of your comfort zone. Books are for entertainment, but it's good to be challenged by them, as well.
I hope that helps!
Anonymous,
