ReplyDeleteI think they are special friends, but they weren't doing anything National Geographic would film but some of us would avoid photographing. It occurred to me that I probably ought to make that clear, as I was posting!

ReplyDeleteThey're truly awesome. I've gotten pretty decent at recognizing their cries, so now I can say, "Hawk's coming" and the entire family runs out the door. How cool is that? :)
I am LOVING these hawk photos :D It really does look like the poor little guy at the bottom is getting attacked, lol. But the hawks do tend to leave each other alone...it's the poor squirrels that they like to pester...at least in my neighborhood.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Chris. :) I think this pair was hunting out a place to nest. Not totally sure about that, but they didn't do anything untoward. They just flew around near each other and occasionally landed on the same branch. It was kind of sweet. They do pester the small rodents. We had one try to carry off a chihuahua puppy in Vburg. It made the front page. The funniest thing about that (besides the fact that the owner scared away the hawk with a broom and then he flew toward the house and she slammed his legs in the door . . . okay, it was just a really funny story) is that the puppy's name is "Mr. Barack". If that doesn't make you spit out your coffee, I don't know what will.

We have red-tail hawks and have to keep a close watch over out little dogs. One swooped down and almost nailed Gigi. It was a young hawk and I don't think he could have made away with her, but she'd have been hurt badly. Rippie & Suzie are half the size and could have been carried away for sure. There have been too many near misses. :( And that's with us watching closely.

ReplyDeleteI go outside with my cat, just as you do with your dogs. She's far too big, but there are a lot of predators in the outdoor world of the Deep South. The one cat we have left was once attacked by a pack of dogs and got her rear end shredded. You can't be too careful with your pets, IMHO.
