Pardon my absence

This was the first part of our day:

Kiddo did fantastic at today's swim meet. In that last photo, he was actually setting a record for his high school's swim team in the 200-meter freestyle.

This evening we attended the swim club banquet, where kiddo got 5 awards. And, then he dashed off to watch movies at a friend's house. I haven't read a single page, so I'm off to amend that. I'm now two book reviews behind as I've finished Alas, Babylon by Pat Frank and Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin. I hope to finish Raising Ourselves by Velma Wallis, before I cave in (but I wouldn't lay odds on my potential success).

Tomorrow, we're meeting eldest to celebrate his birthday a couple days early and then kiddo has some homework that we'll probably finish to a lot of whining noises, late at night. So, I'll just assume that I won't get to the reviews till Monday. Hope everyone's having a terrific weekend!

  1. Congrats to your son!! Sounds like he is quite the swimmer! Of course, now that the temp has dropped (to a FROST alert 2 nights ago) swimming would be a little bit much here in Illinois!!

  2. Wow! Congratulations to the kiddo! That's quite an accomplishment. And happy early birthday to the eldest :) Hope y'all have a good visit!

  3. Stephanie,

Thanks. Kiddo has continued to improve, since he went out for the high school swim team in the 8th grade. He got the "most improved" award, for the second year in a row.

FROST alert? Goodness. We probably won't see frost till January.

  4. Chris,

Kiddo says thanks. :) We had a pretty good visit with eldest, but we didn't think we were ever going to get a meal, for a while there. We're pretty sure the waitress lost our order at the first place we went. We got so frustrated (after 30 minutes and no drink refills) that we told her we'd waited long enough and we were leaving. You'll love where we ended up - we finally got a meal at Corky's. Mmmmm.

  5. Congrats to the kiddo on all his awards! And my Lord, woman, you are a readin' (book)fool! I wish I could say I've finished as many books lately. I'm excited to hear what you think of Zevin because I have Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac coming up on my TBR.

  6. Andi,

Thanks for the kiddo congrats . . . and I obviously goofed off during our rainy spell (no swimming - ha! - reading time!) or I'd never have finished so many books in such a short time span.

I have quite a few things to say about Elsewhere - some positive, some not. Check back in a couple of days, please. :) I keep thinking, "I need to sign up for the Estella drawing," and forgetting. I'll have to do that. I like Zevin's writing, but there were a few things that irritated me.

  7. Your kiddo is quite the accomplished swimmer! Yay for his awards!!

I'm finally home from all my travels and ready to get back into reading & blogging again. I have 3 reviews to write, not to mention all the pics I want to share.

  8. Les,

Thank you. I really had no idea that my son was doing quite that well at swimming, to be honest. When he told us he'd broken a school record, I was stunned.

I'm glad you're finally back!! That makes two of us who are three reviews behind. I can't seem to keep up, right now - too much ferrying kids around. It's a real time gobbler. I'm sure the photos will all be fabulous.

Hope you had a nice time with eldest and the rest of your weekend. :)

  10. Love your pictures. What a treasure for him and you to have these great shots of him during a moment of victory. My congratulations to him, and you.

Is swimming season over for the year, so you can drop back to only 2 million things a day instead of three? Best wishes for some down time.

  11. Nat,

Thanks. We had a tiring weekend, but a good one. Hope you had a great weekend, too!

    Booklogged,

Thank you. I have to be a little sneaky when kiddo is *not* swimming because he hates having his photograph taken. When he's swimming, he's naturally too focused on the job to worry about the camera, so that's good. :) I think someday he'll be glad to have those photos to look back on.

Swimming season has actually just begun. I think we have a total of 10 swim meets - not sure if that includes the state meets, so it could be more - and this weekend's meet was just the third. We have a lot of driving ahead of us and some busy weekends, but we all enjoy the swim meets. Swimming is a very positive sport. We had a couple new kids (not on our team) who swam their first meets and came in way after the other swimmers. I love the way *everyone* applauds a swimmer for making it to the end. It makes my heart swell.

  14. Myutopia,

I know; I'm jealous every day that I have to stand or sit beside the pool in the heat while the swimmers are working out in that nice, cool water. :)

I just peeked at your blog. How exciting!!!

    Kookie,

Yes, it was actually kind of an overwhelming weekend, to be honest. It was great, though. I still owe you a letter.

And, thanks from Will (I'll just assume he's going to say thank you - he usually does when I mention congrats from friends). Now, we just have to make sure that ego doesn't get to big, you know. :)

  16. Lotus,

Kiddo is sitting behind me, so I told him you sent congrats. He said, "Oh, cool." :) Thank you. We're really pleased with his continued progress!
