Oh, no!!!

Look what I heard flapping around in the bottom of one of our trash cans!! A baby wren! Just to clarify, he was bogged down but still alive.

I tipped the trash can, he hopped out and an adult wren followed close behind. Baby Wren is under my car. I'm worried about him because we had a visit from Vampire Kitty, this morning. The garage is suddenly quiet -- no baby chirping in the nest! I'm hoping this guy doesn't come for another visit:

We have a few nests around the yard and every now and then, we find a dead baby. I hate that!

  2. J.Kaye,

I know it's a part of life but it still sucks! I just drove up onto the driveway and there was a cat I've never seen lying under one of the cars, no chirping sound anywhere. No body, either, as far as I could see. So, maybe his wings dried off and they got away. I miss the sound of a baby chirping in the garage.

  3. Ahhh, poor little thing. Hope he made his get-away!

  4. Debi,

Me, too. I'll probably never know, but at least he's no longer stuck in the bottom of a trash can. It would have been horrible to find him after it was too late!

  5. Well, I'm hoping that the big wren helped him move away before Jaws the kitty appeared. You're right though, it is part of life, but it does suck!

  6. Bridget,

LOL, I like that: "Jaws the kitty". :) Daddy wren occasionally flew over to where last year's nest is located, so maybe he took baby over to that part of the yard. That's my hope.

  7. Awww... that is sad. It's the part of life that sucks, like everyone says.

And that cat looks... evil. Or something. Like he was aware that you were taking his picture.

  8. CJ,

Yeah, it sucks. I told kiddo it was horribly quiet without the noisy baby chirping in the garage and the adult hollering at everyone and everything, then kiddo grabbed my shoulders and said, "Listen. Hear that?" Cicadas and other birds were making noise. We may not have heard our wrens, but it was a nice reminder that life goes on.

LOL! Vampire Kitty knew I was there. He was just relaxing after washing his paws. He's a nice cat as long as you don't pet him -- then he gets a wee bit too enthusiastic.

  9. Oh, I don't doubt that he's a nice kitty. It's just something about his face, and not in this picture alone. His face has always struck me as a tad... creepy. Or something.

  10. I just saw Birdman of Alcatraz this week...do you like that movie?

He looks great in spite of everything. The cat looks purposeful.

  11. Poor little guy! One good thing about an indoor cat is I don't have to worry about "presents" being brought to my porch. My sister's cat, Max, used to bring her rabbits and such (although technically he is an indoor cat as well). I hope the little birdie makes it OK.

  12. CJ,

He does have an unusual face, doesn't he? I think he's kind of handsome at certain angles, but otherwise he just looks a little odd to me.

    Bybee,

I have never seen The Birdman of Alcatraz. Can you believe that? Maybe I need to.

Little baby bird smelled like garbage, but he hopped away just fine, once I tipped the trashcan high enough that he no longer stuck in the slimy corner. I think that cat always has a purpose. He can jump straight up at least 5 feet.

    Trish,

My cat is what we call "mostly indoors". She once came close to death from getting her rear end shredded by a pack of dogs, so we like to keep her close. I usually go outside with her, when she needs outdoor time, and then when I tell her it's time to go inside, she trots right behind me, into the house. We had more than our share of "gifts" when our two cats were able to walk outside through a cat flap.

  13. Wow, he does look like a vampire. I bet the bird got away, though, because my cat, at least, always leaves the body lying around.

  14. We have a local stray that leaves dead birds in my driveway all the time.

  15. Dewey,

I'm hoping that not seeing a body means the baby and its parents managed to trudge to their vacation home on the other side of the yard. It's better than sitting around thinking, "He's dead! I just know it!" :)

    Myutopia,

I love cats but I really hate their natural instinct to hunt. It's sad finding a dead anything. I feel for you. Now that I have an older kitty, I really don't get the gifts that I used to, thank goodness!

  16. I hope the baby wren is okay! We get little sparrows in our yard now and then that like to tease my dog. :-)

  17. Wendy,

The adult wrens made quite a ruckus when anyone got near the garage (cats included -- Gray Kitty was dive-bombed mercilessly, one day). They were noisy, but I loved them. I'm hoping they made it to the other side of the yard alive. They obviously didn't go back to the garage. It's far too quiet.
