Wahoo! Wednesday

Many thanks to Fizzy Jill for thinking of me and sending the image above. That alone is a wahoo!

So . . . it's Wahoo! Wednesday! Many wahooey (and somewhat fatiguing) things are happening in my little world. Not many of them involve books, unfortunately, although I did happen across some books I don't need when I was dropping off donations at my library.

Wahoo! for books that have walked in:

Mermaid by Carolyn Turgeon (ARC)
The Taken by Vicki Pettersson (ARC)

Both were library sale finds. Yes, yes, I know you're not supposed to pay for ARCs but the fifty cents I paid goes to the Friends of the Library so let's just say I donated a whopping two quarters to them, shall we?

It is a tiny bit sad to sit at my desk and watch the UPS truck zip past. I kind of miss those little brown parcels.

Looking on the bright side wahoos:

Wahoo for consistency in the flooring at our future new house. This is a "look on the bright side" wahoo because it's actually really hideous, if you ask me. The sellers have just replaced the flooring in almost the entire house . . . and they went with a cheap laminate instead of real wood. However, they did at least put the same flooring down everywhere except the entryway and kitchen (which has nice "brick pavers" flooring). We can always cover bits of it with area rugs. And, it should last a few years. So, that's two bright-side wahoos. Here, want to see? This is the entryway:

You can see the brick in the entry and the icky fake-wood stuff in the dining room, here. Wish they'd leave that nice piece of furniture behind. Note that the resident dog left his toy lying about. So cute. The house has high ceilings, so I'll just try to look up instead of down.

Reading update:

My reading is understandably pathetic, at the moment. I'd forgotten how much busy work is involved in buying a house. I'm lucky to manage about 50-100 pages per day. So, I'm really only focusing on one of the books in my sidebar: Alone in Berlin by Hans Fallada. It's an excellent WWII book that was published in 1947. I've read a few chapters of my face-to-face book group's June selection, Into the Free by Julie Cantrell. I'm hoping to get back to Johnson's Life of London and Learned Optimism, soon. I would not advise holding your breath if you're waiting on reviews of any of those.

Crazy cat photo of the week is a shot of Isabel jumping onto my desk. I think it's very wahooey:

Other wahooish things that are making me happy, today:

Something to look forward to: City of Women by David R. Gillham. It sounds like my kind of book. Love WWII novels.

Have you got any wahoos to share? Please do!

  1. I didn't realize you're moving. It is such a pain but it's so much fun to be in a new space.

    1. You must have missed a post or two, Kathy! It's early days, though. We just got the home inspection done and today we're getting our loan approved. It's very exciting. We've been in our current home since I was pregnant with Kiddo and he's in college! I'm looking forward to the change. :)

    1. LOL Yeah, I told hubby I could live in that entryway. :) Thanks, Jenny! I thought that pic of Izzy was a hoot. Those gals move fast!!!

  3. Oh wow!!! The house looks so gorgeous :D I've been meaning to email you but I haven't had time yet :( So I'll leave a quick comment here to let you know how freaking excited I am for you that you got a new house!!!!! I know what you mean about the laminate floors..I've seen them in a lot of houses that I've looked at too, but they really don't look bad in that photo! And I absolutely LOVE the look of the brick in the foyer :)

Oh and that pic of Isobel is SO adorable, lol. Such a great shot! The kitties are just going to love having a new home :p

    1. Hey Chris!!!

I've been missing you like crazy!!!! I dropped by your blog and was tempted to say, "Where the hell are ya?" but worried you wouldn't even see it. :)

Thanks! Things will look decidedly less up-scale when we move in our furniture, I'm afraid. However, cats add class, of course. LOL

I am so, so excited. They have sidewalks and leash laws and fine you if you don't mow often enough. And, recycling. They have recycling!!!! That warms my little tree-hugging, hippie heart so much.

Thanks. Izzy is currently halfway under the dresser, again. Did you see that pic of her with the ball in her mouth? She is such ridiculous fun. I hope the kitties like their new home. It might actually be helpful to Isabel because we have such poky little spaces, here, and she is terrified of the big feet walking through. Can't say I blame her.

  4. I am sure with a few area rugs the floors won't be that bad... And since they are a recent add it would be silly to spend money on that when there are other things to think about. You can be like us. I hate my kitchen floor, so I went to the store and got different kitchen flooring last year. I still have the ugly kitchen floor... It's partly because I am waiting for someone and partly because the thought of finding space in the rest of the place for all the kitchen appliances just sounds daunting...

Anyway, got off topic there. :) I really like the entry way. And I love the picture of Isobel. So cute. Casey is currently running around playing with her mice and then crying at whoever is closest feet for them to throw one for her. She has a lot of energy! Hopefully this means she will sleep well tonight.

    1. Kelly,

That's our thought, too. We'll just put down throw rugs and ignore the floors till they need to be replaced. The nice thing is that all the flooring is either that laminate or brick -- no carpet at all. That's great for allergies and keeps the house from holding as much moisture. I do love my flooring in this house, but that's because we've been here so long that we've replaced *all* of it -- every single bit except the bathroom tile. So, of course, it's all to our taste.

Incidentally, we have really great kitchen flooring (in this old house) that I highly recommend if you're looking for something long-lasting. It's a wood tone and it looks great but it's actually industrial-strength rubber. It is so nice -- soft and comfy underfoot and easy to clean. We're both going to miss it but we do like the brick.

Thanks! I would never have painted an entryway red, but it looks pretty classy, doesn't it? I think we'll eventually have to buy some kind of a wardrobe because one of the oddities of the new house is that it has no coat closet! Very strange.

Aw, Casey sounds so fun! Isabel was just underneath the dresser, playing with some kind of a cylindrical connector but she took off. I hope Casey wears herself out. There's nothing quite like a cat tap-dancing on your head at four in the morning. It's good to wear them out!

  5. I do think that you might have the craziest cats!! I know they're relatively young but boy oh boy! ;) Love that picture of Isabel jumping on your desk.

And I have to say I'm envious at *only* 50-100 pages a day. I'm lucky to get about 5 in (minus listening which gives me about 20-30 I think).

The picture Jill sent you reminds me of our favorite hangout on South Padre Island--the Wahoo Saloon. Very laid back (and happy) and great Ceviche! http://www.guidetosouthpadreisland.com/Things_to_Do/Bars_Night_Clubs/Wahoo.html

Glad to see you Wahooing!! Sometimes I think that we can truly trick ourselves by looking up instead of down.

    1. I do have very active, nutty cats, Trish! They're such fun. Thanks, I love that photo, too. :)

Well, last night may have been closer to 20 pages. At the end of the day, I'm so tired from making phone calls, running errands and signing documents that I can't even focus. I tend to be so wired that I can't sleep, though. I'll be glad to get the buying process over with and move on to painting, packing and then moving and working on putting up our current home for sale. The second half of 2012 is definitely going to be busy!

Ah, Padre Island. I haven't been there in years. I'll have to ask you where to go, if we ever return. We probably won't go far, for a while!

Thanks! I don't mind fooling myself if it keeps me happy. :)

  7. The icky wood stuff in your future house is the same icky stuff in my apartment...but I know it could be worse. In some of the older apartments, there's a sick, yellow flooring that manages to be gloomy despite its color.

    1. Yes, it definitely could be worse. I'm only fretting because we've spend so much time and money putting nice flooring in our old house and it means we'll eventually have to start all over, again. But, it's not as bad as it could be. Yellow. Ewww.

  8. Love that entryway! The paint color and flooring are both so warm and inviting. Can't wait to see more pix! And I'm so happy for you that there are leash laws, regulations about keeping your lawn cut, recycling, etc. You are going to be one happy camper!!

Great capture of the jumping/leaping kitty!!

    1. Thanks, Les! I'll send or post pics after we've moved in and painted. We're leaving the entry alone but the yellow in den and hallway has got to go. And, we have a pink room to un-pink. :) Thanks! I'm very excited about the leash laws and recycling, etc. I'll be able to ride my bike!!!! I've been so envious of your bike riding. It'll be great to hop on the bike, after 20 years of just wishing.

Thanks! I love that photo. It's so silly.
