I've been tagged!

It has been eons since I've been tagged in a meme, so I was very excited when Care tagged me. You can read the questions she was asked by Trisha in her post.
Rules
1 You must post the rules.
2 Answer the questions the tagger set for you in their post and then create eleven new questions to ask the people you’ve tagged.
3 Tag eleven people and link to them on your post.
4 Let them know you’ve tagged them!
I stole this from Care:
Questions Care wrote for me to answer:
1. Tell me about any letters you’ve written lately to a friend just for the heck of it? Zippo! Okay, I have written a couple notes that I tucked in with little gifts I sent to people, but I don't know if those really count. Do they?
2. Do you have a favorite beer? Rootbeer. Apart from hard cider, I really don't touch alcohol. I know, weird.
3. If you ever write a book (or if you have), which genre would it be/is it? I've finished 3. They were general fiction and they sucked. I'd like to write historical fiction but I am Seriously History Stupid. However, I'm strongly considering studying up on my favorite time period and giving it a whirl.
4. What is your favorite dish to cook? I tend to like things that come out of a box, but only because I hate my kitchen so . . . I'll say pumpkin bread, since I had fun cooking that in Care's house.
5. Didn’t Trisha ask some awesome questions? Why yes, she surely did. In fact, I wanted to answer a couple of them like, "What's your favorite piece of art?" but I'd have two answers (my favorite in my home and my favorite by a famous person).
6. How would you have answered Trisha's Question No.9, "What book would you absolutely hate to see get parodied?" I can't think of anything I'd hate to see parodied. If someone wants to play with a classic, they can have at it. That doesn't mean I'll read it, though.
7. Do you have a favorite number? 7, the Biblical number of completion. But, on the other hand, 7 bothers me because my dad died on the 7th day of the 7th month. To continue with a bit of circular thinking, I suppose I could say, "Obviously, God decided his life was complete." But, I would be ready to argue with myself as soon as that came out of my mouth.
8. Tell me a nonfiction book idea subject that you think I should write a book on because there isn’t one already? Uh . . . um . . . Tell you what. I'll get back to you on that.
9. Did you like my answers to No. 5 for book that should be H.S. curricula? I agree that The Book Thief would be an excellent choice, but The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle is a book I haven't managed to wade through, yet, so I can't say. I do think Murakami is awesome and at least some of the short stories in After the Quake would be worth teaching. A few of the stories would call out the book burners from their caves, if you know what I mean.
10. Red or white? Red dress, white walls.
11. Would you be embarrassed to receive a postcard with artwork by Dali? ya know – the erotic variety? I have some if you want one. I’m kinda embarrassed to send. Not if I didn't happen to know my postman so well, but I do . . . also, I'm in Mississippi. They might kick me out of the state for receiving erotic postal material.

And, now my 11 questions:
1. What's the best book you've read, so far, in 2012?
2. Name a memorable event that made you gasp or which was so shocking that you remember exactly where you were and what you were doing.
3. Who is your favorite poet?
4. Have you read anything by Simon Van Booy? What did you think?
5. If someone offered you the money to go somewhere, but it had to be either Ireland, Italy or Australia, which would you choose?
6. Fairy Tales or Folk Tales?
7. Do you have pets? If so, what kind of animals and what are their names?
8. How many bloggers does it take to change a light bulb?
9. Are my reviews too long?
10. Mountain retreat or sun-drenched island?
11. What is the most interesting object in this photograph?
I think everyone I know has been tagged, already, but I want some people to answer my questions!!!! So, I'm just going to ask anyone who drops by to please answer the questions in the comment section -- or, feel free to tag yourself and continue on at your own blog! Isabel climbing down from a high window, above, will serve as my belated Fiona Friday pic. Yesterday was a long day and I was too tired to post. Happy weekend to all!

  1. Sure, I'll answer some of your questions here! Hmm...best book of 2012 so far: Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones. Memorable event: Cliche, but I have to say when the towers were hit, because my sister was living in NYC at the time and it took hours to make sure she was okay. Fav poet: Elizabeth Barrett Browning!! If someone offered me the money, I'd visit Australia, because I have a friend there I really want to meet in person, and I've been to Italy before, and i have no interest in Ireland. Most interesting thing in the photo: the phone. :)

    1. I have got to get a copy of Howl's Moving Castle. I've either read your tweets about it or a post -- can't remember. It's okay if your memorable event is cliche. 9/11 is one of mine. I don't know that I've read much Elizabeth Barrett Browning, apart from quotations. Thanks! Everyone in Australia just died because the radiation cloud arrived (but the rest of the world was already dead). Yes, I finished ON THE BEACH, this morning. :) Boy, that was interesting. No interest in Ireland, eh? That's where youngest son is most anxious to go. I asked him if he can wait a year and he said, "Sure, Mom." He looked shocked that I was considering Ireland at all. Isn't the phone cool? And, it works!!! The ringer is so freaking LOUD. Love it. I can't hear the other phone ring if I'm in the bedroom. Thanks for playing, Amanda!!!

    1. This is such fun! I laughed out loud when I read your memorable event. I think I shocked myself a little when I started exercising, too. Now, I'm just sore, most days. Nothing to gasp over. LOL So exciting to finally see all three of your kitties' names in one place. You've mentioned them but I keep forgetting. Thanks for the answer about the reviews. You've probably noticed I worry about that. Isn't the old phone cool? I love that thing. It was an ebay purchase. We have some cordless phones but the system came with three phones and they've been dying, one by one. I wanted something old and reliable (and cool-looking). :)

    2. AT&T told us a cordless phone is worthless if the power is out, but a plug-in will work. Good to know.

    3. Yes, we have power outages all the time so we've always kept a plug-in phone. But, our last one died about 6 months ago and I had too long to think about it, I suppose. I do have fun with that 1940s phone. I unplug it at night, though. The ringer could be heart-attack-inducing, I'm sure. It's amazingly loud!

  3. You need to write another book! I attended an author event today and she said her first 3 books were awful and never published.

    1. Yes, that's true of most authors. They tend to have plenty tucked away in a drawer before they manage publication. I'm strongly considering going back to writing full-time, but it would mean either giving up the blog or, at the very least, not reviewing anything but books off my own shelves. I do miss writing fiction.

No other comments were awaiting approval but this one. Hope you enjoyed your company! I had fun playing along. Thanks, again, for tagging me!

    1. It's good stuff, isn't it? I discovered hard cider by accident, really, on tap in Edinburgh. It was love at first slurp. :)

  6. Don't get me started on the number seven. There definitely is some sort of deep symbolism for it that's used in more than just scripture. Weird!

    1. Oh, really? I know a lot of people think of 7 as their lucky number but I didn't realize it had any other symbolic meaning attached to it.

  7. Your answer to number 11 cracked me up :p I read this when you posted it and I'm just getting around to commenting…that's actually the only reason I didn't tag you when I did this, lol. Hope you've been doing good Nancy!! Miss you my dear!! Sorry I haven't been around much lately..hoping to fix that!

    1. Chris,

I had to go back and look. Oh! Well, they wouldn't kick me out of New Orleans, would they? LOL But, this is Mississippi. My postman actually got out of the truck and turned me by the shoulders to point out where our neighborhood hawk had flown while I was busy talking to him, one day. Seriously, I know him way too well! I have the coolest postman!

Miss you, too! I hope you're doing better. I tried Neurontin for migraine prevention and that was a bit of a disaster, so I'm back to no preventives. It's amazing how elusive the answer to treating migraines seems to be, isn't it? Love you!!

  8. I had to laugh when Care asked you about Trisha's questions. I'm having a hard time answering hers as well though I do plan to post them tomorrow.

    1. What's the best book you've read, so far, in 2012?
I've only read one book. Affinity. LOVING kitchen Counter Cooking School, though (boxed food = bad...)

    2. Name a memorable event that made you gasp or which was so shocking that you remember exactly where you were and what you were doing.
I was on the bus on my way to school when 9/11 happened. I thought it was a sick joke on the radio until the pentagon was hit.

    3. Who is your favorite poet?
    Whitman

    4. Have you read anything by Simon Van Booy? What did you think?
Nope but you and Care have me curious!!

    5. If someone offered you the money to go somewhere, but it had to be either Ireland, Italy or Australia, which would you choose?
Australia. Mostly because it's on the brain right now.

    6. Fairy Tales or Folk Tales?
    Both. ;)

    7. Do you have pets? If so, what kind of animals and what are their names?
    Lexi - Chocolate Lab.

    8. How many bloggers does it take to change a light bulb?
Light bulb? Like the metaphorical kind of light bulb?!

    9. Are my reviews too long?
I confess to skimming most reviews these days. mostly because I'm just not reading as much these days. And have limited bloghopping time. I do look forward to getting to your thoughts on Painted Veil, though!

    10. Mountain retreat or sun-drenched island?
Mountain on an island. ;) But probably mountain. I'm not a beachy type of gal.

    11. What is the most interesting object in this photograph?
Which photograph? ;) I do love the bokeh in your header!!

  9. Trish,

Yeah, some of Trisha's questions were rough!! I'll have to see if I have a copy of Kitchen Counter Cooking School. I'm pretty sure I do -- that I won a copy and promptly buried it (typical).

My husband was supposed to be *in* the Pentagon on 9/11. He got out of that trip at the last minute and the fellow who took his place missed his train and was safe. I will never forget seeing the flaming wreckage at the Pentagon and realizing what a close call we had.

Why do you have Australia on the brain?

Don't ask me about the lightbulb. Not sure where that came from. Haha. I guess I was hoping some clever person could figure out a good answer, like "1, provided the blogger has read at least 4 books on the changing of light bulbs and/or the history of light and reviewed at least three of them."

I've already reviewed The Painted Veil. Did you miss it? I'm a mountain gal, too. Beaches are just places to get a blistery sunburn. I'm too fair-skinned for the beach.

The photo below the question, with a black phone, a pile of books and a cat sketch was the one I was referring to. Thanks! I'm glad you like my bokeh pic! I haven't taken anything fun, lately, so I'm just going to leave it up, for a while. It's cheerful, I think. :)

    1. How the heck did I miss that picture?! I swear it wasn't there earlier.

Reading about your husband literally took my breath away Nancy. Even hours after originally reading your response I have chills all over just thinking about it. What a blessing.

And I know you've posted your review of Painted Veil. Hoping to either do a bit of bloghopping tonight or lunch tomorrow. Ahhhh! Maybe I just need to start waking up earlier?! ;)

    2. It was there, honest!

Yes, definitely a blessing. And, we are also grateful for the safety of the fellow who went in Husband's stead. He and a co-worker who went along missed their train because one of them had a prostate problem and had to find a bathroom! They emerged to smoke and chaos. My husband is always early to work because he's such a workaholic. He would have been in the building; there's no doubt in my mind.

My review of The Painted Veil includes my thoughts on the movie and BBC radio series. It's huge! The comments were interesting, too. I felt like Kitty and Walter didn't grow enough in the book, but I'm a romantic and I'd already seen the romantically-bent movie version before I read the book, so I think that warped my point of view. Amanda correctly commented that at least Maugham stayed true to the characters.
