Valentine's Day Storytime

Two painfully romantic stories! Okay, not really. We are so not romantic, around here. And, before I go on, I want to wish a lovely Singles Awareness Day to those of you who are not part of a couple.

Story #1:

When my husband walked in the door from work, I headed out to the entryway and said, "Happy Valentine's Day! That's all you get."
He said, "Oh. Just a minute," and dashed right back out the door.
A few minutes later, Huzzybuns returned and handed me a box. I said, "What is it?" and he replied, "Not sure."
I said, "Did it come from Italy?"
"No, Dallas." My husband goes to the grocery store, wherever he ends up. It's a very cute quirk of his.
I opened the package and it turned out the contents were chocolates filled with caramel. Not bad. I handed him one. That's seriously about as romantic as we get, around here. We share. It's better than some couples do, I suppose.

Story #2:

As we were driving home from picking up our romantic Valentine's pizza-in-a-box, my husband said, "Today is a special day for Larry and me."
Larry is a fellow who used to work for my husband and now heads a different division in the same company.
"Why is that?" I asked.
"About 4 years ago, Larry and I had meetings in some middle-of-nowhere town on Valentine's Day. We decided we wanted a steak dinner, so we went to a restaurant we'd heard was nice and walked in the door. Neither of us realized it was Valentine's Day. The maitre d' gave us kind of a funny look and said, 'May I help you?' like he wasn't sure he wanted to let us in. One of us said, 'Yeah, we'd like a bite to eat,' so he quietly picked up 2 menus and seated us. Every table had red roses in the center. And, there were couples. Traditional couples, only, filling the restaurant."
I asked if they stayed or looked for a different place. "Yeah, we stayed. We were hungry and the steak was great. And, now, every year Larry and I recall our special Valentine's Day."

Well, he had me in stitches. :)

Tiny Isabel gets a tiny bit "Photoshopped" (but I don't have Photoshop, so she really got "Picasa'd"):

Hamburger and his step dad have a hilarious story about the time they were on a surf trip in Costa Rica and stopped at a bar for a beer. Turns out it was a gay biker bar...there was men's underwear tacked up all over the walls.

And yes, they finished their beers before they left.

    1. I love it! At least they could pass as a gay couple, too, right? :)

  2. LOL! My parents are about as romantic as you and your husband. ;) I'm impressed your husband and his friend stayed. Too funny!

    1. I'm kind of impressed, too. They really don't care what anyone thinks; just bring on the food. LOL

  3. hm, sounds like my Valentine's day. The guy brought me back a cinnamon bun from his work... I really like them, they are freshly made, but it was basically just any other day. :)

    1. Yeah, Valentine's isn't too exciting around here! LOL But, that's fine with me. It took me a while to let go of the "big deal" atmosphere of holidays of my childhood, but now I just have no need for that. :)

  5. Great stories! We usually go out to eat a week or so after the 14th, but I was too tired to cook so we went to our favorite burger joint (not a chain) and had a yummy dinner. I gave Rod some fancy coffee for work and a Harry Truman book I saw on Nan's blog. He gave me roses (which he NEVER does!) and some Godiva. Guess we were both feeling extra generous, as we rarely do anything other than cards.

    1. Wow, you guys really celebrated! We don't even do cards. I reject the need to purchase sentiment so I make my own if I feel like it -- you just never know whether or not I'll be inspired, from one day to the next. :)

  6. Fun stories! And you will recognize the shower curtain. I usually show it off to all my guests.

    1. Oh, I didn't think of that. You did give me the tour. I still can't get over that closet. I could *live* in your closet.

    2. In fact, I'm usually obnoxious abt "You have to see my shower curtain!" shoving guets into the bathroom. I will post next week when I am back at home.

    3. I remember the skylight and you telling me how noisy it is when it rains, but not the shower curtain. Haha. You didn't shove me into the bathroom! Have fun! Hi to Dennis!

  7. Aw. D has a "work wife". LOL.

What? Who was the goon that called Valentine's Day Single Awareness Day (SAD)? That's just.....mean. If you were sad about being single. And it's hard to be unaware of single people on VD. On behalf of sad single people, I'm outraged.

I, OTOH, am delighted to be single. It even comes with chocolates and flowers. (They probably think I'm sad. Or observing SAD. Whatever. Chocolate! Yes! lol)

    1. D. has a foot stool he calls "wife". LOL

That second paragraph sounds sad. Actually, I think Singles Appreciation Day (which is what I accidentally wrote, at first) sounds better, myself. That implies that we should appreciate our single friends and remember to send them something, rather than be aware of them. We're all aware there are plenty of y'all out there, after all. Honestly, the word "awareness" should be banned; it's totally overused.

You have very good reason to be happy you're single. And, just think . . . you don't have to share your chocolate!
